Reflections Of Art - Brewer Island Elementary School

 

That’s the theme for the 2018-2019 Reflections Art Program which has been bringing the arts to life for more than 10 million students since 1969. And California State PTA and its members, families and kids are on the forefront of this amazing program, which increases community awareness of the importance of arts in education.

Reflections encourages students of all ages to:

  • Unleash creative talents and be inspired
  • Express themselves imaginatively in their artwork
  • Experience the fun and joy of making art
  • Tap into critical-thinking skills to create art inspired by the annual theme
  • Receive positive recognition for their original works of art.

What is the PTA Reflections Program?

The National PTA Reflections Program is an arts recognition and achievement program for students in preschool through grade 12. The program is designed to enhance quality arts education for students by encouraging them to create works of art in the areas of visual arts, literature, photography, musical composition, dance choreography, and film production. The Reflections program was established 40 years ago by the PTA. More than 500,000 students nationwide participate through their local PTA’s each year.

Who can participate?

Students in grades K-5 from Brewer Island Elementary School

The grade divisions:

  • Primary: K-2nd

  • Intermediate: 3rd-5th

Deadline for submission:

How to Enter?

Entrants must submit their artwork and

Student Entry Packet.

Entry Requirements:

  • Only new pieces of artwork inspired by the theme may be submitted.

  • Each entry must be the original work of one student only.

  • An adult may not alter the creative integrity of a student’s work. Because the program is designed to encourage and recognize each student’s individual creativity, help from an adult or collaboration with other students is not allowed except in the Special Artist Division.

  • Each entry must contain a title and all entries must include an artist statement. The artist statement communicates what inspired the work, how it relates to the theme, and the content of the work. The statement must include a minimum of 10 words, but may not exceed 100 words. 

  • Use of copyrighted material is prohibited, except for recorded music in dance choreography and film production entries. Plagiarized entries will be disqualified.

  • Use of PowerPoint presentations are prohibited because most graphic elements are copyrighted.

Mandatory Requirements:

  • Only ORIGINAL works of art are accepted and must relate to the annual Reflections theme.

  • Students are NOT allowed to submit collaborative/team entries. Only one student name is allowed per entry form.

  • Do not put the students name on the front of the art work.  Put the name on the form only.

What are the categories?

  • All students attending PTA schools sponsoring the program are invited to participate and submit original artwork in one of six areas:

    • Dance Choreography
    • Literature
    • Photography
    • Film Production
    • Music Composition
    • Visual Arts.

How can parents support their students?

Support your child in working independently (done with minimal supervision) to create an original piece of art inspired by the theme 2018/19 “Heroes Around Me”. Ensure your child articulates and explains how their artwork relates to the theme on the Artist’s Statement located on the

Student Entry Packet (including entry form and rules).

How many entries can students submit?

  • Only new pieces of artwork inspired by the theme may be submitted at every of the six art areas.  

  • Students can enter only one art pieces per category, and please make sure there is an entry form to accompany each piece.

Awards Night Ceremony:

Please join us on November 6, 2018 at 6:30 pm in BIES GYM for our Art Reflections Event in celebration of all our entries. Artwork will be showcased to allow students and families an opportunity to view student art work.

  • Entry Forms must be filled incompletely.

  • Handwriting must be neat and readable.

  • Student's name should NOT be visible on the artwork.

  • All guidelines must be followed.

  • Dimensions of artwork must match the guidelines

  • Please follow the rules to make sure you child's entry is included in the judging.
